Normally it’s been dormant, silent, for the past 10 years. Since some real good rappers like Martse, Fredokiss, Taygrin, Lomwe and many others jumped off the train, Malawi Hip Hop was all ruins. All the big names left to concentrate on build their lives through other careers. Living the pitch so open that whosoever feels it, would qualify to a GOAT, LEGEND or ICON without resistance.

See now In early 2026, the Malawian hip hop scene has been revitalized by a high-stakes lyrical “civil war” sparked by the rising artist IKK (Ishmael Kachali). Giving energy to newbies like SKhrizy who went on to take Spe in the Trap sector.

The newbies surely has poked the so called legends, in so doing demanding a comeback. This started with Hyphen formally known as Young K who dropped “Kodi Mwaiwala?” just as a remind to the society, of his position in the rap industry, and so validating his all time position as Malawi’s best rapper.

Following his defiant performance on the Mikozi ‘Ma Bars Pa Bar’ freestyle, IKK declared himself the “only real hip hop” of Malawi, directly challenging the status of industry heavyweights Toast and Slessor and Hyphen.

The Triple Threat: IKK vs. Toast and Slessor

The conflict began in March 2026 when IKK accused veteran rappers of being “jealous” and using his name for relevance. The response from the established elite was swift: Toast (Gomezgani Kambwiri) responded within 24 hours with the diss track “Is This Your King?”. In the song, Toast dismisses IKK as a “comedian” rather than a legitimate rapper, questioning his authenticity and his claim to the Malawian hip hop throne.

Veteran rapper Slessor entered the fray with “Ayi Kuche Kuche,” accusing IKK of chasing clout by disrespecting the pioneers who built the genre’s foundation.

Out of nowhere came this unexpected Alliance: The Toast and Slessor “Beef”

‎While both artists were targeted by IKK, fans were surprised by the dynamic between Toast and Slessor themselves. Despite being long-time competitors for the top spot in the genre, the two recently shocked the industry by releasing a joint project.

On March 23, 2026, they released a music video for a new collaborative track titled “2”. This collaboration suggests that while the “beef” with IKK remains intense, the two veterans have formed a strategic alliance to maintain their dominance over the scene.

The State of Hip Hop in 2026

The IKK-led controversy has been credited by some critics with “unintentionally reigniting” a hip hop culture that many felt had become stagnant. The debate over the “King of Hip-Hop” crown has even drawn comments from pioneers like JB, who reminded the public that the true foundations were laid by figures like Fredokiss and The Daredevils.

As the first quarter of 2026 concludes, the Malawian rap scene is more active than it has been in years, with fans eagerly awaiting further responses and the potential for a live battle between Toast and IKK.
