The Ministry of Health has officially confirmed two cases of Mpox in Lilongwe District, raising health alerts across the region. The announcement was made through a press release issued on April 17, 2025, by the Public Health Institute of Malawi (PHIM).

According to the statement, the first suspected case was reported by Bwaila Hospital on March 20, 2025, while the second case was identified on April 9, 2025. Laboratory samples collected from the patients were tested at the National Reference Laboratory in Lilongwe, with both results confirming Mpox infection on April 16, 2025.

Mpox is a zoonotic viral disease that spreads from animals to humans and between humans through respiratory droplets, bodily fluids, and direct contact with infected materials. It is commonly marked by fever and skin rashes. Vulnerable groups include children, pregnant women, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those with multiple sexual partners.

While there is currently no specific treatment for Mpox, health officials emphasize that treatment is largely supportive and focused on relieving symptoms. The Ministry is urging the public not to panic, assuring that the situation is under control and preventive measures are in place.

Citizens are advised to avoid close or skin-to-skin contact with suspected or confirmed cases, maintain good hygiene, and use condoms during sexual activity. The public is also encouraged to report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility.

The Ministry of Health is collaborating with international partners including the World Health Organization, CDC USA, Africa CDC, and the Lilongwe District Council to enhance disease surveillance, ensure swift responses, and contain the spread of the virus.

Dr. Samson Mndolo, Secretary for Health, signed the release, urging continued public cooperation and vigilance.
