The US conducted a military operation on May 2, 2011 that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden, the founder and leader of al-Qaeda. Bin Laden was responsible for numerous terrorist attacks, including the September 11 attacks.

The US tracked bin Laden for years, gathering intelligence that led them to a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The CIA identified a courier close to bin Laden, providing crucial information.

The US military planned and executed the operation, code-named Operation Neptune Spear, with President Barack Obama’s authorization. Stealth helicopters transported the SEALs to the compound.

US Navy SEALs infiltrated the compound, engaging in a firefight with bin Laden’s guards. Several individuals were killed, including bin Laden’s son Khalid.

Bin Laden was found on the third floor and shot and killed by the SEALs. His body was later buried at sea in accordance with Islamic customs.

The killing of bin Laden was a significant victory for the US in its war on terror. The operation demonstrated the US capability to track down high-value targets.

The raid marked the culmination of a decade-long pursuit of Osama bin Laden, dealing a significant blow to al-Qaeda. The US continued to pursue the organization’s leaders and operatives.
