A 29 year old woman has been arrested by the police for attempting a serious crime of endangering her own new born baby. The woman has been identified as Victoria Mphande based in Lilongwe.
The incident has just occurred a day before yesterday, the same day Victoria gave birth to her baby. Victoria gave birth to her baby at Area 18 Hospital in Lilongwe.
Maria Kumwenda, the Spokesperson for Lingadzi police station explained that, Victoria thrown away her new born baby into the toilet in Area 18, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalumbu in Lilongwe.
Kumwenda has further commented that, the new born baby has been taken to Area 18 Hospital where all required treatment is being given.
According to the witnesses, Victoria with her new born baby in hand, visited one of the toilet and left soon after some minutes. She moved out of the toilet with a bay showel, of which it seems like there was a baby in it.
” We heard non-stopped screaming of a baby coming out from the same toilet, that attracted our attention”. they said in deep sorrow.
Her fellow women in Area 18 have shown disappointed by Victoria’s inhumane decision. Many women are confused, saying that no matter what, how tough the situation is, Victoria is greatly unjust.
” Aaaaah mtakhara ine singachite yoporayo, ndipheranji mwana osalakwa” they said.
Beatrice Peter, a nursing student at Malawi College of Health Sciences (MCHS) said that, there is a need for guidance and counseling among Expectant mothers. This could likely minimize such poor mindset.
” There are so many Organizations such as Save the Children USA, Open Arms Malawi, and Urinji Child-Care Trust that are there to support vulnerable childrens, if the money was the case” Beatrice Said.
