Malawian musician Abdul-Karim Saidi, popularly known as Bandera Wachiyao, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Mangochi. The ruling, delivered on April 17, 2025, comes after Bandera was found guilty of abducting a 14-year-old girl, an offence under Section 136 of Malawi’s Penal Code.
According to court findings, Bandera had been involved in a romantic relationship with the minor for about three months. On January 3, 2025, he took the girl without the consent of her parents and kept her for two days. The incident came to light when the girl’s mother reported her missing to the police. Following investigations, Mangochi Police arrested Bandera, leading to his eventual trial and conviction.
The presiding judge, Senior Resident Magistrate Muhammad Chande, ruled that Bandera’s actions constituted a serious offence that could not be overlooked, especially given his influence as a popular artist in the region. The court emphasized the need to protect children from exploitation and send a clear message that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of social status or fame.
The case has triggered public outrage, particularly among child rights activists and members of the community, who have condemned the abuse of influence and betrayal of public trust. Many expressed disappointment, citing that public figures like Bandera are expected to serve as role models.
The conviction highlights Malawi’s commitment to protecting children from harm and enforcing laws that safeguard minors. Section 136 of the Penal Code provides for penalties against individuals who unlawfully detain or take away children without guardian or parental approval.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and the role of the justice system in upholding the rights of children across the country.
