Parliament is mounting so much pressure on the current DPP government to quickly start re-investigating the root cause of the Chikangawa plane clash that claimed lives of 9 Malawians. This includes the Vice president at the time The Late Dr Saulos Claus Chilima.
On 10th June 2024, a Malawian Defence Force Dornier 228 carrying Vice-President of Malawi Saulos Chilima, former First Lady Patricia Shanil Muluzi, and seven other occupants, crashed in Chikangawa Forest Reserve in Nkhata Bay District; all on board died in Malawi’s deadliest aviation accident.
At the time of the crash, the aircraft and its passengers were en route from Lilongwe to Mzuzu Airport in the Northern Region to attend a funeral. Many believe this accident was not a natural occurrence but a political targeted assassination by the former MCP government. This understanding stems from the belief that MCP believed Chilima was their main opponent and challenger come May, 16, 2025 general elections. Therefore substituting him would have been their only option that’s according to word on the streets.
But investigation reports that are currently available have denied these allegations. Citing that too much fog at the day was the main root cause, that it affected the flight. Malawians still believe there is lack of substantial information in this report. With the understanding that it doesn’t mention the availability of the “Black Box” which is responsible for keeping all the communication records between the pilot and aircraft Controller monitors that were assigned on this airspace radar that day.
The missing of this “Black Box” still put so much on the table. This might be among others the reasons why so many Malawians believe that the investigations needs to be revisited. So much so that the nation might be opened up to the actual truth. This truth can be the only path to initiate the balance of justice and clear the most, if any justice is to be served.
